August is here, and it’s still hot, hot, hot! Your HVAC system is probably running overtime to beat the heat, and that’s not even considering the fans, chargers, and household appliances plugged into your walls. In the hottest and driest time of year, it’s important to prioritize fire safety in your home, especially when it comes to electrical fires. The more prepared you are, the more likely your fire safety methods will never have to extend beyond prevention.
Update Safety Measures
We’re talking fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, and exit plans. Keep your fire extinguisher(s) in an easy-to-reach place and ensure every member of your household knows where it is and how to use it. Keep it away from moisture to protect from rust and check it over every month or so to make sure everything looks okay. Fire extinguishers should be replaced at least once every 10-12 years if kept in good condition.
As for smoke alarms, don’t ignore the beeping that means the batteries need to be changed! Replace them immediately rather than deactivating the alarm until later and keep batteries on hand for this purpose. Smoke alarms should be replaced entirely every 10 years, much like fire extinguishers– try to do them all at the same time for efficiency’s sake and to avoid a lapse in memory.
Finally, you know the drill – make sure very room has two or more exits an individual can use to get out. Ensure each window and door is able to open easily from the inside and discuss with your family where to meet in case of an evacuation.
Summer Security
Campfires are all the rage in the warmer months, but always use caution when starting a fire. Keep at least one bucket of water at hand and make sure you can retrieve more quickly. Never start a fire outside of permitted areas when camping and keep any fuel or flammable materials well away from the fire – dry wood can catch and spread in a blink, and you don’t want to be responsible for a wildfire.
When enjoying your backyard fire pit, don’t build the flames higher than you can handle. No matter how much old wood you want to get rid of, wait until the fire has died down a bit before piling on the fuel. Bonfires are a classic summer night staple, but rest assured your s’mores will not suffer for a lack of blistering heat.
Finally, never leave a fire burning unattended, no matter how low the flames. Always put it out before leaving the area and never throw embers in the trash.

Faulty electrical systems and wiring are the third leading cause of structural fires nationally, so it’s crucial to watch for signs of damage and have your electrical system inspected regularly.
